When Tim Robbins appeared on the scene in Bull Durham (1988), we could scarcely have guessed that this baby-faced giant was a political animal with a backbone of steel. Nor could we have known he was a writer and director of conscience as well as a joyful, unpredictable actor. In the intervening two decades, Robbins has amassed a body of marvelous and important work, but he has accomplished something even rarer: He has matured into an artist of singular integrity. The films he has directed, Bob Roberts (1992), Cradle Will Rock (1999) and Dead Man Walking (1995), are three of the most outspoken sociopolitical commentaries American cinema has produced since the early days of the Reagan era. As an actor, Robbins has adroitly used his rakish charm and seeming innocence to powerfully reveal his characters’ darker (and more compelling) sides, in movies as diverse as The Player (1992), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Short Cuts (MVFF 1993) and Mystic River (2003). In his new film, Phillip Noyce’s apartheid-era political thriller Catch a Fire (MVFF 2006), Robbins portrays an Afrikaner policeman of dubious motives with his typical first-class blend of amiable geniality and quiet menace. We are thrilled to honor Tim Robbins at this year’s Festival.
