The California Film Institute celebrates and promotes film as art and education by presenting the annual Mill Valley Film Festival, exhibiting film year-round at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center and building the next generation of filmmakers and audiences through CFI Outreach. <more>

Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center

  • Beautifully restored, state-of-the-art, three-screen theater
  • One of the few nonprofit theaters in the U.S.Year-round exhibition venue for independent films, documentaries, classics, retrospectives, international works and special events with filmmakers from around the world
  • Serves approximately 150,000 Bay Area attendees annually

Mill Valley Film Festival  

  • World-renowned, 11-day festival held every October screening over 200 innovative US and international films for over 40,000 film lovers
  • Consistently rated as one of the top film festivals in the nation
  • Premieres of features, documentaries and shorts, as well as tributes, gala events, achievement awards and seminars

CFI Outreach

  • Nearly 40 annual screenings and innovative educational programs, reaching a wide variety of children, students, families and filmmakers
  • Over 4,000 students per year involved in our schools program
  • Q & A sessions or panel discussions following screenings Seminars and workshops, including workshops for filmmakers, adults and children
  • Guided curricula and screenings for Bay Area schools and educational institutions from pre-school to college
